Will it ever end?

Now they're saying Tamarac is closing. This bad glass industry news HAS to stop! Our industry is in shambles.

Re: Will it ever end?

where is Leon when we need him

Re: Will it ever end?

Guys lets be realistic. Sun is in a buying mode. They just bought UGC- their buying others. They are taking over the world.

Re: Will it ever end?

give us a little slack...we're not closing in Tamarac, just moving

Re: Will it ever end?

Moving- Closing... really? does it matter? that location will be gone next month. So will at least 3 other locations based on the UGC sale. But Sun will be active buying other people and taking aim after anyone who left them. so sadly the folks at UGC who were at Arch will be gone very soon thats the lawson-leone way. what a mess.

Re: Will it ever end?

Seriously, how many jobs lost at Tamarac? What else will close? Is there a need for two 100,000 ft+ operations in Atlanta? Will Sun go after Grey Mountain again? So many questions.

Re: Will it ever end?

tgi closing for sure. arch already telling people that tgi's ppg stuff will come from villarica.

Re: Will it ever end?

dang - tgi was a really good company. probably the only consistently profitable ugc spot

Re: Will it ever end?

Someone must have temporarily forgot that PPG CFP licenses are non-transferrable and Scott Smith is not accepting new applications. Good thing for TGI. Would be silly to close such a well run facility.

Re: Will it ever end?

define non-transferable. is it possible for cold hard cash to be warmed and softened by the south florida sun? or maybe it just depends on what your definition of "is" is

Re: Will it ever end?

slickwilly does not understand if ppg does not sell their coated products to arch they WILL sell it to someone else they do not need arch to move this product

Re: Will it ever end?

Has PPG put a value on a CFP? Does forgiving millions in debt to transfer a CFP set a precedent for the value PPG arbitrarily gave to select fabricators? I'm so confused.

Re: Will it ever end?

its funny the TGI guys are saying no sun influence but the poor pdc guys are crawling with em there. guess doug has barred the doors!
still stunned Sun closing tamarac- bad for our industry when a company thinks locations are worth more dead than alive. (especially a location like that!)

Re: Will it ever end?

Sun will come out smelling like a rose on this deal......Bottom line it will do nothing positive for the industry but hurt it!!!

Re: Will it ever end?

yep the will be smelling like something and they do the same with united they did with arc ---it will not be a rose

Re: Will it ever end?

Sun Capital saved Arch and United Glass from liquidation. Some plants have closed and some jobs have been lost, but the alternative was all plants closed and all jobs lost. The industry should thank Sun Capital for putting their money on the table and salvaging whatever can be salvaged from two companies that were simply unable to survive a protracted economic downturn.

Re: Will it ever end?

No doubt- its a pure asset play baby. all acquisitions lead to stripping and selling of the assets. no one wants to actually operate that group- they are there to make money for sun cap. arch akron is closing, nj will be close behind and tgi will be done too. so buy 3 places, close three places, sell assets.... this is not your fathers glass business anymore, these guys play for real. thanks leon for bringing them in, what a legacy.

Re: Will it ever end?

Does anyone know what is going to happen to the Jackson, ms branch? i am a worried living in an already terrible market losing a good vendor. What other companies serve the region?

Re: Will it ever end?

i believe that many will be surprised as Sun takes over the Midwest completely. It would appear that sun now has a lock with ppg for solarban and already had a lock with arch for guardian product. i think the Midwest plants on both sides will be thinned but not as much as everyone expects.

Re: Will it ever end?

Yeah thats funny. the only thing sun has a lock on is asset sales. sell mirror places, sell tamarac, sell akron, strip tgi and so on. it is a great question on guardian though, I wonder how they feel going back to a number two spot. sun needed and wanted ppg so bad they bought a company to get it! but still the guard guys love them some sun cap. guess thats not davidsons company anymore thats certain. and as for owning the midwest, you still have to OPERATE the company. sun hasn't bought every supplier in the world (yet) and until they do, people won't just roll over for theM

Re: Will it ever end?

Akron closing plus Bridgeport or Indy? Gutting.

Re: Will it ever end?

Jackson is the only AAG location who can service the area (Gulf coast/New Orleans) still doing major business. I personally don't think the Jackson branch is going anywhere as much as some people would like to see it disappear.

Re: Will it ever end?

Only a Sun Capitol insider or new Arch guy would call the company AAG.
And jax lives only because Sun hasn't figured out how to sell assets off there to make money.

Re: Will it ever end?

Only time will tell.... so all of ARCH Jackson's 'well wishers' can just keep blowin' the smoke

Re: Will it ever end?

Everyone knows that Nashville Tempering/Gulf Coast Glass dominates

Re: Will it ever end?

wow! That statement actually makes me laugh aloud...Yes, All 2 locations of Nashville/GCG are sure to take over the glass world.

Re: Will it ever end?

Um I think the post meant those guys dominate the gulf coast. But yet it is very funny!

Re: Will it ever end?

they do dominate the gulf coast region and they have managed to keep their prices higher than the others because their service is top knotch. I have no problem paying for the service they offer.

Re: Will it ever end?

Sorry to hear Don Power fired - Purge continues.

Re: Will it ever end?

yep ---like i said "how to make a small fortune in the glass business ---start out with a big one"

Re: Will it ever end?

Those of you with a Dilbert desk calendar will have gotten a big laugh out of today’s events.
For those without Dilbert. Oh well!

re the Power-outage...I have a new appreciation for these sunshine boys!

Re: Will it ever end?

I heard that the Jackson facility is closing the 12th of May. Hate to see this happen as a few more good loyal employees will be on the street.

Re: Will it ever end?

sand by i think you will see lots more concerns down the road

Re: Will it ever end?

Locking the doors on May 12, 2011

Re: Will it ever end?

It is true. They used to be a great supplier in that market until another company moved in and out serviced them with good pricing and incredible service. Good Riddance!

Re: Will it ever end?

The new company that will be Arch/Vitro/PDC/TGI has some redundancies to deal with, but then it might be interesting. PPG's CFP's certainly get spread out, Guardian gets their mirror/lami deal and Oldcastle has a rival with equal funding. Sadly lots of jobs lost.

Re: Will it ever end?

OC gets a rival with similar funding but no where near the management, structure or committment. OC has to be LOVING this as will every regional independent. Hathaway should send a bottle to Sun to thank them for making his life easier!

And the job loss would be epic, but since Arch has closed (or is about to close) several locations without a peep in the media, would anyone notice?

Re: Will it ever end?

So you're saying the two glass mags should mention the closing of

AMN, AMS, Tamarac, Jackson, Akron and others?

Might cause them to be off time, off spec and off cost.

BTW, I just looked, and I actually think I saw a mirror ad from a company in Chapter 11.

Re: Will it ever end?

US Aluminum makes mirror? Crazy.

Re: Will it ever end?

VC approach - buy low sell parts high ?? time will tell. what ever happened to cummings - former UGC vp sales? fell off face of the earth.

Re: Will it ever end?

All Arch Tamarac production folks moving to SMI/Mirror Crafters! Great news to keep jobs! Finally good news.

Re: Will it ever end?

Bob Cummings is working for Vitro, currently

Re: Will it ever end?

what is going with us aluminum??
