A telephone scam has been targeting the glass industry for nearly three months now. What experiences have you had with it? Or, why do you feel the glass industry is being targeted?
It is not only the glass business that is being targeted. As a glass wholesaler, when we first heard about this we called all our customers to warn them. It was amazing how many had already had these calls and then, how many received them after we warned them. In talking to customers there were also phone calls for paint and garage doors which also fell among the same scam guidelines.
We did get a fax from one of our customers which listed this persons phone, fax, address and credit card number. I reported this to consumer protection and they were able to warn the unsuspecting owner of the credit card (which, of course, was stolen). Unfortunately, consumer protection told me that the problem was a police matter but the police don't seem to be too concerned about it. At least we warned as many companies as we could and, hopefully, saved someone from falling victim to this scam (we were too late for 2 customers though.)
I am employed by a glass company and we have received at least 12 calls from the scam. We get two to four calls from the scam artist. He first calls through TDD/TTY and then calls directly. We have asked for call back numbers, forwarding addresses, and message numbers in case they can't be reached. Each time the scam is the same 50 pieces of 1/4" clear. The most recent call has been for 30 pieces. I wonder if it is a terrorist group look for funding. Either way the authorities need to be involved.
