From the time the first Spanish Conquistadors came to the area in the late 1500s, until the late 1800s, there were many Indian tribes in the area.

The Indians in Ojinaga in the 1880's were Lipan Apaches and Mescalero Apaches. The Lipanes were an amalgam of Julimes, Jumanos, and Cholomes. The Mescaleros were pretty homogeneous.
