the McDonald visitor ctr has excellent programs.

16" is a lot of telescope!!
I would think that some short drive onto the
BigBend-Ranch road would provide excellent viewing
and not be that far from town...

If you have Presidio ISD students interested,
get their Sci teacher to see if they can get
dual-credit for SulRoss Astronomy course via
the "distance education" program.

good luck and clear skies.

Replying to:

I bought a big 16" telescope and there seems to be a lot of folks with telescopes at PresidioISD interested in astronomy so I thought we should start an astronomy club and get together periodically and gather up several telescopes and get away from the lights of Ojinaga, not far, maybe 10 miles or so. It would also be an option to get a bus and go to McDonald's Observatory or the Planetarium at Sul Ross University and more. Of course this club would be open to anyone. The Presidio area offers some really dark skies and wonderful viewing opportunities so we should take advantage of them. First we need to find a really good spot to have the viewing sessions. We need a good flat, dark, and secure site to set up some telescopes as far from OJ lights as possible without making the trip too long. Any ideas?

if most of your members are in school then you can go to mcdonald's for free with some help from the school...
