Criminal records post 1902

I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction. My Gt Gt Uncle, Edward John Eley b. 1870 in Bristol married in Bristol in 1902, but by 1911, he was prisoner at Portland in Dorset. I don't know where to start to find out what he had been convicted of or how long his sentence was. At the time of his marriage, he was a labourer, but previously had been at sea. If he was back in Bristol, is there any significance that he served his sentence in Portland? I don't know when he was released, but died in Bristol in 1939.
Thanks for any help.

Karen
