I think I know the place you are looking for. Could it have been called The Madeira? It is immediately opposite the Wills Building. At the front was a combined café and cake shop which I visited a number of times. I believe there was a dance hall at the back although I never went there.

Would you like me to confirm the name the next time that I am passing?

In my earlier reply, I suggested that the dance hall might have been The Madeira, this should have been The Berkeley.
