Cummins or Cummings Publicans?

I have both my ggg grandfather John Cummings (Cummins) age 37 and his
daughter Ann Cummings (Cummins) age 14 listed as a Puclicans at the 1851
census. At that time they lived at 8 ??? Hill, St. Phillip & St. Jacob,
Bristol. I later have John Cummins as a malster.

There are also some indications of a Publican John Cummins up at Stroud
(1849 Will)

Do you know/hold any informations about the Cummins as Publicans?

Kind Regards

Soeren Egdal

Re: Cummins or Cummings Publicans?

Hello Soeren,

Cross referencing with an 1853 street directory it would appear that the pub in question was the Glasshouse, Lawrence Hill, although the landlord was by then, one Thomas Palmer. The No.8 on the census is in fact a schedule number not the door number. This 1853 directory lists John Cummins, beer retailer at No.17 Twinnell street, as does the 1861 census, no pub name is given in the directory nor the census.
