John Fogerty

The biggest single event in Houston is taking place right now....The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a month long event, seven days a week, and starts with a two hour rodeo every night followed by a live concert in Reliant Stadium "Home of the Houston Texans"....Not being much of a C & W music fan, Janet and I always look forward to the Rock and Roll Act nights....Last night we saw John Fogerty....I always liked some of the CCR songs, but never considered myself a big fan....That changed last night....At 60 years of age and a change of guitar on nearly every one of the 18 songs he did, I was amazed at what a great show he puts on....Kenny Aronoff was on drums....Personally, I think the guy is one of the best drummers around these days....With five guitarists and a drummer making up the band, this is a great Classic Rock show....A 65,000 seat stadium with the rodeo sound system has typically been a hit and miss situation for many acts coming to play this event over the years....Fogerty and band sounded great and I can only imagine how much better it is in a small venue....If they are coming anywhere close to your town, I highly recommend checking it out....By the way, his legal problems with the other CCR mates is over and he does perform the CCR songs along with his solo stuff....

Re: John Fogerty

Hey Glenn, glad you got to see a good show. I saw Fogerty a couple years ago on "Austin City Limits" when he released his "Blue Moon Swamp" album, and I was highly impressed. The new material off the album was grate (very Fogerty-like ), and hearing him perform the CCR material again was great. SO much better than Creedence Clearwater Revisited with someone TRYING to play and (yeah, right) sing like Fogerty. There's also good tunes on his "Deja-Vu All Over Again" album.

The legal troubles with the record companies are'nt really what kept him from performing the tunes. I have an interview with him somewhere that says the reason he stopped performing them was that he was'nt getting any of the writers royalties because of shady dealings, and he felt that everytime he performed them, he was just adding money to the record company coffers. He said he finally decided to perform them again while doing a Vietnam Veterans benefite concert and all the vets were telling him how much his music meant to them and got them through hard times. That night, for the first time in like 20 years, he came out during the encore and did 4 or 5 CCR tunes, starting with "Run Throught The Jungle". He said the response he got let him know that "these songs don't belong to me anymore, they belong to them(the vets)". So, while he still does'nt get writers royalties for all those great songs he wrote, he's come to terms with that and now performs them for the fans. Thats classy if you ask me.

Re: John Fogerty

I caught Fogerty's show in a very small venue and it was, indeed, one hell of a a show. For those of you that may question Fogerty's guitar chops, while there was nothing wrong with his CCR-era playing, he is a much, much better guitarist now than he was then, and he still has that wonderful primal-scream of a voice.

Wow....Great info Rob....Thanks for clearing that up....We are going back out to the stadium next Tuesday night to see "Larry the Cable Guy"....Can you imagine 65,000 Drunk Red-Necks screaming GIT-R-DONE in unison?....Should be fun, I'm thinking!....

Re: Re: John Fogerty

Well, this is un-feminine and un-liberal, I know, but I really love Larry the Cable Guy!

Oh, I like Fogerty too - but Larry, now that's a really funny dude.

Toni....We had Blue Collar Comedy Tour Two on the bigscreen at my brothers house last Christmas....Mom laughed so much and so hard at Larry that she pee-peed little brothers sofa....We're scouting for another relative to visit for the holidays this year....Just kidding!....It's great to see a 79 year old woman with a little Alzheimers have that much fun.

Re: John Fogerty

Don....I agree with your take on his Guitar Chops these days....One of the things I've found missing in concert experiences the last few years seems to be bands just going through the motions so to speak....Jam sessions seem rare....The Stones never dissapoint...TYA was always a jam....BB always finds "The Groove"....Arc Angels, Delbert, and Jonny Lang have been memorable....Last night with Fogerty was as close to the good old days as I can remember....It was very nearly an hour and a half solid jam....I loved it....Might jump on a plane and go catch him again in fact....

Re: Re: John Fogerty

..........That's just funny there, I don't care who ya are

Your mom is pretty cool - seeing as you've already shared with me the fact that she can still rock and roll, why shouldn't she get down to some real make you pee-pee funnies. Allright, mama!

Rob: Yeah, 100% in compliance with your assessment of John Fogerty. Great Story, too. Hadn't really gotten a definitive reason as to why he had elected to play his old tunes again.

Glenn, sounds like this year is really shaping up to be the year of the "old school". I've already gotten tickets for the "Pretenders" and "Heart" to satisfy my need for a woman's voice. Now, seeing John Fogerty would be a good start for the guys followed by Ray Davies (who just released a great new album), Deep Purple (another recent excellent release) and our own Alvin Lee. I might have to go see Johnny Winter, too, if I can squeeze him in.

Victor....What will we do when our music heroes are gone?....Oscar or no Oscar....I ain't ever listening to, buying, or going to see no "Its hard out there for a pimp"....No one will ever convince me that Rap is anything but Crap....Go see Fogerty....You won't be sorry!....Ray Davies sounds like a lot of fun too....I'm gonna keep an eye out for that one....

I like Larry the Cable Guy, too - but Ron "Tater Salad" White kills me! That's another reason my wife is a great lady - she puts up with my redneck sense of humor!
