Hurricaines, Evacuations....This city really needed this at this time....There are certainly more important things in life than pro sports, but I have to tell you this city is really enjoying it's first trip to the World Series in it's 43 year franchise history....My dad who passed away two years ago was actually invited to try out as a catcher for the old Houston Buffaloes, which was the minor league team located in Houston just prior to the Colt 45's being named and then the Astro's name came about a few years later....My fathers love for baseball and his beloved Astros was certainly passed along to his wife and children....Dad faithfully watched his team get close for years only to have them come up short, but he was never a fair weather fan....He was ready for spring training every year....One of my greatest memories was Dad, myself, and my son Kevin attending a spring training game in Florida during Jeff Bagwells rookie year....It was amazing to have three generations doing something together that we all loved....My father never desired much during his wonderful life....He wanted health and happiness for his family, and he wanted to see the Astros get to the World Series....He never got that wish, but how ironic it is that last nights game came on my Mom's 79th. birthday with all her children and grandchildren celebrating her birthday and the Astros clinching victory....Knowing my Dad, I wouldn't be surprised a bit if he had something to do with orchestrating this arrangement....I hope you are enjoying this as much as we are Dad....We Love You....
I am a hopeless sentimentalist when it comes to baseball. It has been a constant in our society for well over a century. Field of Dreams tears me up everytime. I am happy for both the ChiSox and Houston. It's been a very very long season without rain for both teams.
May your father march out of the cornfield w/ Shoeless Joe!
Sox pitching will totally shut down the Astros as Chicago wins 4 straight!
My thoughts exactly Scott....D.mn Lou!....Who you pi..ed off at today?....The Sox do have some great pitching....but Clemens, Petitte, Oswalt, and Backe are not exactly chopped liver either....We'll soon find out....Best of luck to both Chicago and Houston, but you already know who I'm rooting for now don't ya?....
BTW, Astros in six. Pettitte, Oswalt and the Rocket et. al., will be too much for Chicago.
What, no Yankees?
Patty....that would have been too fine, wouldn't it?....Roger Clemens and Andy Petitte coming back to New York as Astros?....I have business aquaintances in New York, and we were all hoping that would have happened....Oh well!....I have had plenty of fun telling them we did our part, where are the Yankees?....No matter!....It was time for some other teams to go to the big show for a change....
It has been privately revealed to me by an "inside source--close to the Astros" (OK, it was Glenn), that last night's loss to the WhiteSox was an important part of Houston's overall strategy. Indeed, according the source, the Astros have the Sox "Right where they want them". Rope-a dope strategy ala Muhammad Ali, you may ask? YES. The Astros will win tonight, take two of three in Houston, then come back and win it all in Game Six.
OK,ok. Now the Astros are REALLY in the driver's seat! Plan B is even better than Plan A....i hope...
Please review my post of 10/21/05.....yeeeeehhaaawwww!
Hey Chi-town White Sox fans.... put it on the board,Astros Gone........
Here in St.Paul, a sports columnist has written that Konerko, who is a free agent 48 hours after the Sox lose to Houston, will sign with the MN Twins. Hhhmmm..Twins have 19 games with WSox next year. Suuuuweeeet. Of course we gotta sign him and the Twins are cheap and Konerko definitely is NOT.
HEY SCOTT THE TWINS MAYBE CHEAP BUT THEY STILL SEEM TO FIND SOME TALENT. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A PIRATES FAN
WE HAVE A BUNCH OF YOUNG PITCHERS COMING ALONG BUT THATS ABOUT IT
P.S. HEY GLENN HANG IN THERE BUD, IT,S NOT OVER TILL IT,S OVER RIGHT
AT LEAST THE LAST GAME WAS EXCITING EEH
SEE YA.... PEACE PAUL
You have outdoor baseball! I love the Twins but seeing them live at the 'Dome is like ...well I can't print the simile I have in mind.
Too bad about the Pirates. I'll always identify them (recent history only--there is always Mazeroski & 1960!) with Jim Leyland and Bonds, Bonilla & Van Slyke.
YA YOU,RE RIGHT SCOTT, I STILL HAVE MY VIVID MEMORIES OF ONE OF THE GREATEST ALL ROUND PLAYERS EVER THE GREAT ONE (ROBERTO CLEMENTE)TO TIDE ME OVER
I WAS JUST PAST THE BALL PARK ON SATURDAY ON MY WAY TO THE PITT FOOTBALL GAME , AND HAD A CHANCE TO SEE THE HUGH BRONZE STATUE OUTSIDE THE GATE OF ROBERTO AGAIN, THATS ALWAYS COOL AND THAT KEEPS HOPE ALIVE
SEE YA, LATER SCOTT
PEACE PAUL
Yeah, Roberto! Forgot to mention him. Certainly one of the best ever...The Pirates have an esteemed history. As a kid I actually listened to much of the 13 inning perfect game Haddix pitched against the Braves (tells you how old I am). Baseball has a gotten it's team parity equation solved a bit better in the past few years. The Twins and Oakland A's recently are, and I'm sure the Pirates will someday soon be, serious rivals to the "others".
THATS COOL SCOTT, YEAH I GUESS THAT DOES DATE YOU A BIT BUD
HEY WE SHOULD BOTH BE HAPPY AT LEAST WE HAVE A TEAM TO COMPLAIN ABOUT
I GOT TO SEE THE LAST GAME AT FORBES FEILD, WHICH WAS COOL. I,LL NEVER FORGET SCOTT THEY WERE RAFFLING STUFF OFF THE WHOLE GAME , AND OUR TICKET NUMBER WAS CALLED , AND WE WAITED IN THIS HUGH LINE AFTER THE GAME , AND WE WON A BOX OF POTATOE CHIPS
Congrats to the ASTROS!
(this is from a Braves fan)
The first real ball game I went to many years ago was a game between the Braves and Astros. Lasted 14 innings and Joe Torre hit a homerun for the Braves to win.
Sorry for my seemingly inapproprate post above.
I was cheering the Astros on in the WS.
I got out of the house early for a drs. appt. and didn't see the news this morning.
I didn't get the sad news about the Cubs until I got to work.
Sorry Glenn.
When your team goes out of the game (Braves), you have to find another team to root for.........any Southern team against any northern team gets my support.
You may refer to my post of 10/21-Go White Sox!
Hey Lou, you have a crystal ball or something?
I guess you made a killing off the series with that premonition!
My bets were down in April and I've very pleased with the outcome. Chicago deserves a champion baseball team and sox fans are the greatest-many Alvin Lee fans among 'em. You may recall when Alvin wore the blackhawks jersey on stage years ago-nice tribute to some great athletes!
Lou....Congrats on the sweep....Chicago has a very good team....Houston was shut out something like 17 times this year and was 15-30 in late May, so this was a remarkable second season in a row of unbelievable comebacks just to get into the playoffs, much less the World Series....For those of you that watched any one game, or every inning of every game like I did, I hope you would agree that both teams put on an interesting series regardless of the sweep....Chicago is a great baseball city....Houston really had a great time hosting the first ever World Series Games played in Texas....I don't know if Fox showed it or not, but the Astros came back onto the field shortly after the game and spent quite a bit of time thanking the fans for their support....I'm actually glad this is over....If Houston would have taken it to game 7, I don't think my old heart could have stood anymore....The 14 inning game d..n near killed me....Tip of the Cap to Chicago and the Sox, we were just happy to finally get there....
Alvin Lee fans know great music and great baseball!I'd love to see him play the Star Spangled Banner at a Sox game next year!
