I think that may be an old interview Paul - I remember reading it a while back and was horrified. God is pretty selective in what he tells Gee, isn't he? - I mean, he forgot to tell him to read the ****ed memo that said Al Qaeda was gonna fly planes into buildings. He forgot to tell him that there were no WMD in Iraq (well, maybe he did tell him that one but Gee didn't really care, did he????), he forgot to tell him we have people starving in this country and more people living in poverty than before his brilliant give the rich tax cuts, heck, he even forgot to tell him about Katrina - after it happened! I don't know but if Gee is getting messages from God, either God has Alzheimers or he's really messing with the dude.

By the way, I don't have any problem with Mexicans or anybody else coming into this country - its what we were built on. Sure would be nice to see them have to pay taxes like the rest of us, though.

Paul, I'm a tad bit offended by your rant concluding with a "flood of Mexicans" taking jobs, etc., etc., etc. Being of Mexican/Spanish/French descent I take offense to your narrow minded view of Mexicans. My mother was born and raised in Mexico. When she married my father (who was born in San Francisco) they came to California to live. My mother not only worked hard to raise four children she also worked hard to earn a teaching credential and become a very successful teacher and business woman. That my friend is the fruitful goal of all peoples who pursue a better life for themselves and their familes. Most of the immigrants that come from Mexico, Central America and South America work service and farm labor jobs particularily here in California. Call it insource/outsource. They're not stealing anyone's job! They're being hired by farms, ranches, hotels, vineyards, etc., because the local pool of laborers including myself will not do that kind of work. I had my own transportation company (which I sold off) and now I work part-time driving limo's, buses, etc., primarily here in the wine country. I once picked up at a very wealthy client's home thinking I was going to take him to the airport. I ended up taking his "Mexican" staff to the airport so they could go home for the holidays. This very wealthy "white" man thought so much of his staff that he personally made sure they were well taken care of. Another man, a vineyard owner, told me his valued laborers/grape pickers/pruners were so valued that he, too, would foot the bill for them to return every year to his vineyard. Yeah, Paul, I do understand that any countries resources can be taxed without appropriate controls especially with regard to immigration - but, let's look at the whole picture with an open mind and not take an ignorant and paranoid point of view.

I think many Americans have a tendency to blame problems with our economy on the influx of Mexican immigrants - too bad, really, because frankly I can't at all see how they are the cause. I DO believe we need to get a handle on illegal immigration (from everywhere) because the loss of tax revenues, etc, can indeed put a drain on resources - but lets never forget that America is truly a nation of immigrants and that it's immigrants who made us as strong as we are today. When my grandparents arrived from France and Italy , they were poor and discriminated against, but they came with a desire to work hard - my mother's father worked in a factory for many years; my father's father was a sharecropper - but through that hard work they improved their lives and the lives of their children and ultimately benefited the country as a whole. I've lived among immigrant Mexicans and Cubans and Columbians etc - what I've seen in general among all of them is that same willingness to work back breaking jobs if necessary to provide a better life for their families. We don't need to stop them from coming here, what we need is to stop their exploitation and ensure that employers pay them fair reportable wages.

One of the lesson of history that goes under-learned is that we have had wave after wave of immigration - each greeted with the sage prediction that it was ruining America and would lead to doom. Well, despite all of the nay-sayers, America survived and wil continue to do so. The "Great Migration" of 1890-1920 from Eastern and Southern Europe to the US - the largest mass migration of people in history - possitively dwarfs immigration from Mexico, so this isn't even that large of an immigration trend. Immigration tends to become an issue only when there are economic problems and competition for low-paying jobs that normally are only wanted by recent immigrants. Thus, we need to concentrate on both immigration and economic issues, but realize they are not necessarily one and the same.

I'll agree w/most of your post except where you state the migrant labor from Mexico (whether legal or illegal) as being a major financial/jobs problem for our society. Any "welfare" for which they may qualify pales next to the corporate welfare our current regime grants its patrons. By forcing this labor underground we lose their tax revenue. Toni has more on this subject down-thread, but I had to get my two cents in (par value currently $0.014). We can use more labor from abroad, but I agree it has to be legal, honest and equitable.

No objection to immigrants wherever they are from, provided they work within the system and pay thier dues.

We too have a distinct lack of skilled labour, and are screaming for tradesmen. I don't care about colour or creed, I'll give them a job and pay them the going rate.

The immigrants I object to are the ones who make no effort to learn the language or culture of their adopted country and disappear into the 'black economy' at the same time milking the welfare system for all it's worth, without ever contributing a penny to it.

In many cases the employers who exploit immigrants are their own countrymen, who become very wealthy indeed on the back of sweat shop labour.

Paul, I certainly don't mean to be unsympathetic to you, or anyone who feels negatively affected by some inequity. We have an opposite yet similar problem generated by the same idiotic immigration laws. You're evidently hurt by under-priced (and less talented, I'll wager)labor competition from those who are here illegally. For me, I have been trying for two years to get a uniquely qualified woman from Moldova here legally to fill a position that I cannot fill any other way. Immigration and foreign worker laws tell me "NO" every time. My advice to her was to fly to Mexico and walk across! It's cost me thousands $$ to not have this position filled.
