Cellphones and People

Cellphones were not as popular as they are now, especially among students even elementary school students- sending SMS, asking permission to pick up the phone, walking by sending SMS, etc. Seems that cellphones could be a big disaster; how do people there react about this? Are people being "occupied" by cellphones? That would be great if you would like to meantion your country as I am working on a big project - Cross Cultural Understanding Program? wanna help ? thank you

Re: Cellphones and People

as a teacher in the UK, mobile phones had to be banned from the classroom as there was lots of problems regarding concentration, trying to cheat and bullying. it is now a necessary means of communication but i think the biggest problem it causaes is lack of willingness to socialise. in the past, when you arranged to do something, you would be there, on time, raring to go (or not, but would end up having as good time). Now people text and cancel at the last minute - they dont even have to confront their laziness!!! it also provides the excuse "didnt you get my message?". Very common in the UK, especially with the bad weather . . . people become insular and stay indoors. not good for health or the soul.
would you like me to put this up in my forum, with a link to your site? this might send some more help your way!if it doesn't work, i can copy and paste the info for you . . . let me know

Re: Re: Cellphones and People

Hmm sometimes cellphones can be important tools. I don't understand why people are willing to change their cellphones withing six months ( trying new brands!!). There should be a constitution that ban cellphone usage in class or meetings or cinemas. Oh thank you for your help Elizabeth- maybe I can also do the same with your forum? it's a bit hard to open a discussion online sometimes.

Re: Cellphones and People

It is pretty much the same in Sweden as Elisabeth Mentions regarding the UK, in Sweden there are even some parts of buses and trains that have mobile free zones.
Personally my phone is over 4 years old now and I only use it for emergencies and as an alarm clock when the battery runs out on my normal alarm clock.

Re: Cellphones and People

I live in Australia, and theyre everywhere. I dont go to school, and my son is home-schooled, but we take the train to Sydney every few weeks, and the cell phones are ringing constantly. I have never had one and never will. I hate using telephones at all, and having one in the house is all i can stand, lol!
