Methods of Analysis

This is my basic method of analysing dreams. (I am no expert so this could be built on by those who are more knowledgable.)

I start by entering the dream into a word document.

I then go through the dream highlighting in blue each individual symbol I recognise from the dream.

I use a dream dictionary to identify each symbols meaning(s) and enter these in brackets in red beside each symbol. (Usually during this step links already begin to appear between symbols, establishing a meaning behind the dream.)

There are sometimes symbols which are either personal (such as people) or I can not find in dictionaries. If this is the case I will then ponder what feelings and meanings I get from these symbols and record these seperate to the dream. I then enter this as in the step above.

I then try to establish links between the symbols, building a basic story of what the dream is saying. I find this part of the process rather intuitive, and whether or not there is a more defined method of undertaking this stage, I have yet to develop it.

Keep in mind, this is the point of view of a rookie. Does anyone have a more advanced method they would like to share?

Re: Methods of Analysis

Timmi,

This is the method I began with and it served well. It is time intensive yet worth the effort.

I add a 'character map' that is a list of the dream characters that I know, or know of, in waking life. I then list my thoughts on this person, what is my association with the person, what do I admire/dislike, what are our similarities/dissimlilarities. I don't spend a lot of time on this. The first few thoughts that come to mind are usually accurate in the interpretaion. This helps me to define the symbols and the dream.

About a year into interpreting dreams I began to make the intuitive 'leap' in more clearly understanding meaning and getting the thread while reading a dream before looking to dictionaries. Once a specific central theme is clear the interpertation is much easier to pull together.

In addition, I utilize several 'rules' as set out by Jung and Akroyd:
1. Dreams are often serial in nature, a series of dreams will progressively address the same issue. With building knowledge (gained from examining each dream) the dream reflects progressive content due to slowly moving content from the unconscious to consciousness.
2. A single dream can, probably, has several meanings because a person has multiple aspects to life each in development, such as spiritual, psychological, daily digest, deeper collective, etc. The unconscious is fluid so not bound by conscious's rigid rules.
3. View each dream as a play with usually four distinct acts. Indepth information on this method is located on MDS but I don't recall the page link. I probably have this as a word doc if you want it via email:
Introduction: sets the stage for the issue
Characters: here are the aspects
Action: the issue and potentialities
Conclusion: often provides the solution, or information on the next stage of the issue
4. Insight and feedback from others is crucial. One reason the cyber Dream Forum is an excellent platform for discussion and feedback. We learn from and teach each other.

All this can be found in MDS.

Kind regards,
Kathy

Re: Methods of Analysis

In addition to what you were saying Kathy, in regards to dreams having multiple meanings, the fact that dreams communicate through symbols states for a sure fact that dreams could be interpreted in different ways due to the many aspects of each symbol.

I have also witnessed dream series that are interconnected, and slowly build one after the other. Intriguing.

Would you happen to have a word or excel document set up that has a basic framework of analysis? Eg you take the text of the dream, put it into an 'analysis' view, then have different segments set up for each part of the dream / character? If not I might make one up that I would make available to any who would want it.

Re: Methods of Analysis

Timmi,
Your method is similar to how I began interpreting dreams. Breaking down the symbols and trying to identify any associations within the dream. Now I use a bit of a different approach much like Kathy. The theme is what I look for in the dream flow with the symbols supporting that particular theme. I believe anyone who uses Jung's approach to dreams will eventually form a similar approach to interpreting dreams. It is an evolution of understanding dreams that takes over and instead of interpreting a dream there is an ability to 'read' a dream. It is part puzzle, part play, part intuitive understanding. And it all points back to te dreamer.

Re: Methods of Analysis

I don't have a template document.

Many thanks,
Kathy
