Show Rider- I appreciate your ideas, but I don't think that would work. The CHSA really can't try to make money off the backs of the show managers, if you get what I'm saying. While we did vote a modest increase in division fees this year, all the costs of putting on a show have really risen. Adding office fees etc is one small way the shows can continue to try to make enough of a profit to make it worthwhile to host shows. If you have never hosted a show, you can't imagine how much is involved! That is one reason I don't host them at my farm. It, in my opinion, is a GIANT P.I.T.A.!! I'm really glad other people do it and really glad I don't. I have also had to deal with the rising cost of everything "horse" running my barn. I try to do everything at as low a price point as I can, but at some point you have to decide whether the effort is worth the diminishing returns. I think that is why a lot of boarding barns are rethinking things. Just as I can't personally support other people's horses, show managers will not support shows that don't return enough on their investment. You know, this is a great association and a really great group of people that support it. I feel very lucky for that. It gives a lot of people that want to show a way to do it MUCH more affordably than going to rated shows...which have gotten ridiculous!!
As far as what you get for your huge investment of $15 for a CHSA membership, the organization tracks all points for it's members...not just the winners. It sponsers the Classic, luncheon, and prizes (usually at a loss). It pays for this web site. It sponsers the year end banquet, auction, and year end ribbons and awards (also sometimes at a loss). And it organizes (or tries to) a large, healthy group of shows, as well as putting your name on the prize list mailing list.... where in the world else can you have so much fun for $15?...Yep that's what I thought!!! Anyway, I am glad ya'll are interested enough to post on this message forum with your concerns. I only wish we could get more of you to come to the annual meeting and TALK! We can't fix everyone's issues, but we are interested in hearing about them and will try our best to do what we can under the parameters laid out for us. Now...carry on....and try not to cook out there! |
