Striker bolt

We recently bought a 77 Gremlin X. I noticed when opening the drivers door that it looks like they welded a square metal plate with the striker bolt on it. Is there a problem with these breaking? Why would someone weld a plate to the door frame with the bolt in the middle. It doesnt look like there is any rust around that area.

Anyone shed any light?

Thanks!

Re: Striker bolt

The door bushings wore out,no previous owner took time to fix the bushings so the door constantly was misaligned thus stricking the stem til it broke the metal around the backing plate tearing the metal.. I assume its still adjustable..

Re: Striker bolt

Is it safe to say I cannot fix this? Even if I remove the plate and buy a new pin.

Re: Striker bolt

It can be fixed.. Its important to know if the striker bolt was welded to that plate or the plate is reinforcing the door post. It should still unscrew..
(don't unscrew bolt to take out). Then see if the square plate(drilled-tapped) BEHIND the post the striker bolt fastens to is adjustable via of a 4 way movement up/down/left/right.
If so then take to a shop and repair
the cosmetic part.
