401 cranks
I plann on building a 401 for my Gremlin. I been to told that I want to stay away from 401 built after 1972(the crank won't match up). It was also suggested that a 401 from a later jeep would also be a problem. My Gremlin is a original v-8 and I wanted to use the amc trans that's in the car. Any suggestions??? |

Rob, Amc used a Borg warner tranny till 1971. Then they swapped to a torquecommand in 72. The crank you are looking for is 72 and up 401. They are ALL the same from 72 to the last year of the 401 in 78. The jeep 401 is the same. When they had a TH400 tranny or STd tranny there is a bushing in the back of the crank that must be removed for the converter to fit from the gremlin automatic tranny. Hope this helps. Davis |
