Cleaning out gas tank?

Any recommendations of how to clean the rust out of my gas tank? I was thinking about just power washing it out, didn't know it that was a good or bad idea. Also recommendations of anything I can put on the inside to prevent it from rusting again. And any thing to put on the outside to protect it, I was thinking paint and undercoating.

Re: Cleaning out gas tank?

I have used por15 products with much luck. They make a gas tank sealer. I have never used it myself but if I were to seal a gas tank I would definately consider it.

Re: Cleaning out gas tank?

I've had a lot of experience with gas tanks and actually have used POR-15. I would take the tank to a radiator shop and have them boil it out. Not expensive but sure gets things clean. It really needs to be clean for the gas tank kits made by POR-15 or Eastwood. If you can't take it to be boiled out, then wash it and flush it good with soapy hot water. Then fill it with marbles, ball bearings or nuts/washers and shake it hard to knock the loose rust off. Then wash/flush it again. Then use the chemicals provided in the gas tank kit according to the instructions.

The gas tank kits claim to be able to seal pin holes in the tank. Hopefully your tank isn't that far gone. I would try and paint the outside with something great at preventing rust because Gremlin tanks rust bad on top and around the holding strap areas. I think Eastwood has paints designed to look like the zinc coating the tank originally had if appearance is important.

Good luck!

I took mine to a Radiator shop as Mil suggests. They are already set-up to do the work, and they can get it done fast.

Re: Cleaning out gas tank?

Back in the day we used to clean out tanks, flush, put some good clean gravel in it and shake the heck out of it, clean and flush again.. works good
