GM Saginaw manul steering box rebuild???
Anybody on here rebuild one of these? I have power steering on my car now but is just dead weight in a drag race, LOL! So i would like to go back to my trusty old manual steering box but it has seen better days. When i took the top cover off of it it looked like it was packed solid with grease, is that what is supposed to be in the gear box? If not then what is supposed to be put in them? Anybody want to rebuild this for me? Let me know what the fee would be and maybe we can talk. I looked at my service manual but all those little bearings REALLY scare me because sure as **** i will get it apart and NEVER be able to get it back together. Let me know. |

well i know they're supposed to be filled with 90w gear oil, like differentail fluid. If that helps. |

Most manual steering boxes were filled with gear lube like the differential. However, when they got real loose the gear lube would keep running out and then they would put grease in. So if you see grease instead of gear lube, the box has been in bad shape for quit some time. |

Cadipacer, If you could send me the measurements that would be great, also if there is any way you could send me some pics that would be good too. My brother still has that 472 caddy motor, transmission and the headers for it and said he would take $350 for all of it but i think you could have it for $300. If you are interested in it let me know, my uncle will be going to TN to pick up his big block chevy motor over near Bristol, TN. and i might be able to get him to haul it down that far if i tossed in a few bucks for fuel. Just let me know Thanx, Ben |

Thanks Ben.. for the mention.. but the crossmember of a Pacer is just below the center of the block,,,, assuming they are block huggers headers,,they wont fit. The stock Cadillac fit the Pacer fine. almost better than AMC own
