Transmission crossmember
Hi guys, I just bought my first Gremlin (wanted one all my life since I had a "Greased Gremlin" matchbox car as a kid). Anyhow, I have a Maxi Blue 73 Gremlin with a 232 and a column shift automatic. I'm relatively new to AMC, and do not know the make or model of the transmission, other than it's original. The problem is that the transmission crossmember is rotted out and has to be replaced. Would anyone have such a thing that they would be willing to part with? I'm trying to have this thing back on the road this summer. Can't wait!!! Warm weather is here!!! Thanks alot guys, Scott Uttech Beaver Dam, Wisconsin |

HI Scott, Welcome to the wonderful world of Gremlins. You will be quite happy with your purchase! Your Gremlin has a Chrysler 904 transmission in it. AMC used both the 904 and the 727 in all of their cars starting around 72 or so (I don't know exactly) 727's were mostly used in the 8 cyl and the lighter duty 904's were used in the 6 cyl. If nobody else can get you one, I probably can get you one from my favorite scrap yard, It's just that I don't get there much during the warm weather. So if you can get one from someone else, that's great, if not I can be your backup. It's a common part that usually doesn't rot away, surprised yours did. |

[:)The Gremlin you have with a 6 cyl will have the AMC boltpattern 904 but the guts of the Chrys units. AMC first used the Chrys designed transm in '72,, the 727 was never used in the gremlin V8.. (sold to general public) 727's could be obtained in all others as fleet equip, even with the 258". The crossmembers in those years were the same for auto and manual & 6 & V8, the rubber-mounts changed for the tailshaft alignments. The Spirit should be the same.. The Wisconsin cars are prone to rust in ALL areas.. I'd question where the crossmember bolts into if thats good too.? I'm trying to recall all this from memory or previous experiences. I hope this is correct,, if not others will chime in too
