How many Gremlins left?

I mentioned this in the "Virginia shooter" thread, but wanted to take it in a different direction. during the extensive news coverage of the Gremlin used in the crime spree, the police reported that there are 700 registered Gremlins in Virignia. I have to be honest, that number astounded me. My brother and I had just had that converstation this morning. We both thought the number was under 100. I'm not counting junkyard and parts cars. These are, at the very least, registered, so presumably most are running driving examples.
Is this more or less than you would think it would be? What about your state? How many do you think are still out there fighting on?

Re: How many Gremlins left?

The more pertinent question here is how many Gremlins are registered legally for driving on the road. Do the numbers indicate the number of Gremlins registered but have had the license expire some time ago? If so many of those could have been parted out long ago or been sold and removed to another place.

That number seems really high to me if that's licensed/registered for driving Gremlins. I would have believed that if the state were California.

Re: How many Gremlins left?

Hey Gremil,
I am in California and the thing I notice is all the AMC's seem to be in the upper midwest and central east coast. I dont know if they didnt have the market % here or what because the climate is great for keeping old tin rolling. I constantly get the "I havent seen one of those in YEARS" comment. I doubt there are 700 Gremlins here and guess that the Virginia figures may be how many are ON RECORD, which may go back many years. These cars may be merely "ghosts" in the records.

Re: How many Gremlins left?

Not all of them are registered, Tom. Ours is non-oped at this time.

There was a Gremlin invoved in an accident yesterday morning here in Bakersfield. My wife and son thought ours was the only one in the area.

It is now!

Re: How many Gremlins left?

In my county in East Texas I don't think there is another Gremlin, at least they are well hidden if there are. Hard to say how many Gremlins might be around if rarely driven.

And like Scott was pointing out, those that are driven get wrecked from time to time.

Re: How many Gremlins left?

I've heard more than once that the reason there are so few in the midwest is that most were chopped up and made into modifieds for the home town race tracks...if they didn't rust away first I know of only two more besides mine in my area. west MI.

Re: How many Gremlins left?

I know mine is the only one on the road where I live but I know of at least one '74 thats in a field rusting away I think that 700 for Virgina is high it would surprize me if there were that many in any state on the road.I see more AMX's and Marlin's at the AMC shows then Gremlins and there was fewer of each of them made figure that one out.Ive had my Gremlin for almost 3 years and have only seen 3 others at shows which surprizes me but I dont mind its nice to have the only one but Id like to see more.

Re: How many Gremlins left?

In the county that I live in there are only two gremlins. There are 88 counties in Ohio. If you figured two per county that would be 176 for the state of Ohio. That still sounds high.

Re: How many Gremlins left?

Well, they used the term "currently registered". If the registration expires, then I wouldn't say it was registered. I don't know how registration works in other states. Any other Virginians that could shed light on the terminology?
In VA, you can register your car for one or two year terms and that is what gets you a current sticker for your license plate. So, I assumed they meant cars with current registration. That is why I nearly choked when I heard the "700" figure.
That number actually sounds more accurate to me if it was the total number of AMC cars registered in VA, not just Gremlins. Given the innacuracy of some of the other "facts" of the case, and that there is such little understanding of AMC cars in general, and Gremlins specifically, I really have to question that number.

Re: How many Gremlins left?

I think Ill move to Va. Thats where my people are!
Theres a guy on AOL whos profile said he owns I think 6 or 7 Gremlins. There are quite a few people in the Gremlin cmmunity who own more than 1 at one time. So it all adds up and its quite possible that 700 are still registered in VA.
I keep seeing ads online for Gremlins in NC. That seems to be an absolute hotbed of them. Florida used to have bundles of them, too.
This year at the Woodward Dream Cruise, I counted 10 Gremlins.
There out there in some form or another. But 10 years ago, if you told me there were 700 in Va alone, Id have laughed. I figured there werent even 700 left in the country. Since then, they have been popping out of all the nooks and crannies and making themselves known.

Re: How many Gremlins left?

You'd probably be surprised at the number of Gremlins still left somewhere in storage, garaged or just plain covered up. Once I got my 77 Gremlin and had it out gutting it for paint, lots of people were stopping by to let me know where possibly I could find another one. These are not in the registered numbers though. But someday could be.
