AMC treasure trove: Found!
I have been hearing about a seemingly mythical "yard full of Gremlins" in my area for about the past year. Nobody that ever tells me about it can quite recall where they have seen it or they think they're all gone. Well, today someone finally pointed me in the right direction and sure enough... 4 Gremlins (All 70-73) 2 Hornets (1 early 2dr sedan, 1 Sportabout) 2 Pacers (1 coupe, 1 wagon) 1 American (4dr, maybe '67?) ALL in varying states of decay, but no doubt full of useful goodies. The farm is abandoned and the owner is allegedly in jail (but I can't confirm this). The county has really been cracking down on inoperable vehicles lately. I'm thinking about how to approach this...I really don't want those cars to ever get hauled off without getting a crack at them. I also don't want to take advantage of someone's misfortune. By all accounts, it has been at least 5-6 yrs since anyone has lived on the property. Anybody ever run into something like this?

Start with the County Sheriffs office.. and a have a address to refer with,, let them tell you what can be done concerning the cars. The Estate may be on record with the County, they might pass your name as a interested party.. ? All they can say is NO!

Good advice. Also the local town hall will have the owners name ( of the property) and address. try to contact the property owner before going to the local sherrif. I once found 2 gremlins next to an abandoned barn. Went to town hall, found the owner called left message, and long story short, 3 years later they were mine. If yo get nowhere with trying to get in touch with the registered owner then check with the local Sherrif. My .02 Davis |

we have one local here, we know the owner well. lots of gremlins about 6 or 7 with one sliding rag top 2 pacers, lots of concords, 1 javelin 1 amx with the go pak engine some sprits (all wheel drive) one big matador 2 door and the small matador coupe 2 door and we bought a rambler marlin from him, 2 gremlins, and a matador 4 door and many other makes of orphan cars, he will only crush what is absoultly junk His business is called effingham motors and it is located in Florence, South Carolina you will have to look up the number but you will need to talk to kenny about the cars. |

I found a 72 silver Gremlin X in an overgrown field in the country about 40 minutes drive from my house in East Texas. The trees and brush had grown up so thick around it that I had to go on faith by those guiding me to it and walk into the woods, but I found it along with an early 60s Vw Beetle and Ford Falcon. The major of that little town lived in the property next door and told me the owner of the property had died and all of his children had moved away to other cities. What's more is the children were fighting over the property. He guided me toward the name of the street as the family name and using that I tried to track down any heirs after getting more information from the local county courthouse. Well, as luck had it Googling the name got me no where, but as I continued to try different combinations suddenly I got Google queries showing other variations of the spelling of that name. Guess what? The name of the street named after that family was misspelled! I finally tracked down the son who gave me a dismal report on the cars. No titles and the property was held up in litigation. He was very impressed that I did track him down and promised to call me once everything was settled, but he never did. Hope you have better luck than I did with my search. |

I get pretty upset about all this "ordinance enforcement" that requires people to clean out their yards and crush all the cars. That, plus the fact that high value of scrap metal is resulting in salvage yard owners to flatten and haul off everything regardless of condition. I took a road trip a few weeks back. Went up to Bay City, MI. There was a small yard at the south border of town that had a few 40's/50s cars and a '69 Pontiac Wagon. I should have stopped in and gotten more info. I would have considered buying that Pontiac just so I could resell it to someone I knew would save it as oppossed to crushing it. Itll probably be used in a derby :( |

You can tell by the popularity of the retro styled cars like the New Beetle, Mustang, Thunderbird, PT Cruiser and Challenger that people want cars with personality. But new ones. I guess most people aren't up to the rigors of maintaining and restoring an old classic cars. Sadly, by the time anyone notices that they are all gone it will be too late. |
