Patriots enter state golf tournament playing well BY MIKE McDONALD Staff Writer Woodbridge Sentinel - May 17, 2006 The Colonia High School golf team (13-7) has achieved the goal set forth by head coach Stephen Gleitzman in the beginning of the year. "I thought this team had a good shot of qualifying for the state tournament, and we did," the coach said. "I'm proud of the way my team has played all year." Gleitzman was planning to bring golfers Jeff Totin, Brandon O'Halloran, Nick Tran, Steve Sabo and Miguel Hipilito with him to Overpeck County Golf Course in Teaneck on Monday (weather permitting) for the Group III tournament. "Although we want to have a good showing, whatever we do in the state tournament I consider gravy," Gleitzman said. "We will be playing some great teams, so we just have to try our best." Gleitzman and his team played nine holes at Overpeck County Golf Course last Thursday in preparation for this week's state tournament. When asked for his first impressions of the golf course, Gleitzman said, "The course is kind of flat with lots of water. There seems to be a lot of wind as well. I think we will be OK though." Gleitzman decided to go with three seniors (Totin, Tran and Hipilito) and two juniors (O'Halloran and Sabo) for his lineup, hoping that their experience would help them at a relatively unfamiliar course. Fortunately, Gleitzman feels his team is playing at its best right now. "Earlier in the year, I think the kids had a lot of other things on their mind. The kids were involved with a lot of other things," he said. "Now, I feel like the team is coming together, and we are playing the best we have all season." The Patriots, who just came off a win against North Brunswick on May 8, know that the team has played well despite a tough schedule, only six home games, and no golf course to practice regularly on. "We do not have a golf course that we can practice on every day like some schools do," Gleitzman said. "We also played a tough schedule this year, playing some Red Division teams. Still, we did our best and so far have had a fairly successful season. Right now we sit third in the White Division behind South Plainfield and Monroe." Despite not practicing on a golf course every day, Gleitzman's kid do practice a lot. "Kids get to the gym around 6:30 a.m. in the morning and hit golf balls. The kids are devoted to making themselves better golfers. As coach, you love to see that," Gletizman said. |

Patriots' clutch play leads to a GMCT title BY MIKE McDONALD Staff Writer This past Memorial Day weekend will certainly go down as one of the most memorable weekends for the Colonia High School softball team. The Patriots, coached by Ann Cyrana, won a thrilling, eight-inning Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament semifinal game over Bishop Ahr on Saturday, then came back to knock off top-seeded Sayreville on Monday to collect the team's first GMCT title since 1990 on Monday. The Colonia team seemed to take on a "never quit" mentality all weekend, as they continued to battle two of the top teams in the GMC. "Everyone contributed. We play really well together as a team," said Cyrana. Colonia was able to win Saturday's game against Bishop Ahr by doing all the little things that winning teams are able to do, like scoring two runs without getting a hit. The Pats also perfectly executed a double-steal, and were extremely patient at the plate - most notably displayed in a 10-pitch walk with two outs in the eighth by Meghan Donoghue. It was her walk (which came after fouling off four pitches) that opened the door for Kate Pischetola, who hit a rocket to the Bishop Ahr second baseman, which could not be handled, and allowed the winning runs to score. Defensively, Adrian Rastocny pitched the best game of her young career, as the sophomore hurler struck out 10 batters and walked none. Unfortunately an all-Woodbridge GMCT championship game never happened as John F. Kennedy lost to Sayreville, 1-0, in the other semifinal game on Saturday. Kennedy, which finished its season at an impressive 22-5 mark, just couldn't plate a run, while Sayreville was able to score the winning run in the seventh inning with a walk and a sacrifice fly. Although it wasn't an all-Woodbridge matchup, the title game was still action-packed. Colonia, who trailed by a score of 2-0 until the fifth inning, managed to tie the game in that inning, before scoring two more runs in the sixth inning. What made the two-run rallies most interesting was the fact that all four of the runs were scored with two outs. What made the Patriots clutch play even more surprising was the fact that Colonia, during the season, was 2-7 in games decided by less than three runs. The hero of the tournament was the senior, (Kate)Pischetola. Although everyone on the team contributed in the postseason, it was her hit that kept Colonia in the game and kept the team's season alive. After she watched Sayreville pitch around Brittany Moore with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to put runners on first and second, Pischetola took an 0-2 pitch and drove the ball to knock in both runners, thus tying the game. Then, in the sixth, it was Amy Ullrich and Tierney Markou who drove in Colonia's third and fourth runs of the game, while Rastocny kept Colonia in front with her magnificent pitching. After allowing two early runs, the team's star pitcher settled down and did not give up another run. But as Cyrana said, everyone contributed the Pats' memorable run through the tournament, one which saw them knock off the top three seeds in succession down the stretch. Kayla Santos and Jackie Torres both had successful sacrifice bunts, which proved to be pivotal to the team winning games. Amanda Reilly and Nicole Aquila were pinch runners who came around to score the two key runs in the championship game. Meghan Donoghue drew the key walk, which opened the door for Pischetola to drive her in and score the winning run in the win against Bishop Ahr. Brittany Morgan had a key single in the game against Bishop Ahr. Amy Ullrich's bloop single put Colonia up 3-2, a lead the team would never relinquish in the championship game. Tierney Markou drove in the team's fourth run of the championship game with two outs. Moore's reputation as a prolific slugger led to her being pitched around, which opened the door for Pischetola to drive her home. Put it all together and you have a well-deserved championship for a team that did all the little things at the perfect time. |

from: http://ws.gmnews.com/news/2006/1129/Sports/037.html Another team that enjoyed the turkey a bit more this Thanksgiving was the Colonia Patriots, who beat rival Woodbridge on Nov. 17, 20-18, in their annual match-up. Colonia was led by the legs of Eric LeGrand (102 rushing yards) and Whitley Harris (111 yards and two touchdowns), and some big defensive plays down the stretch to finish the year at 4-6, the same record as the Barrons. Colonia, who fell behind early when Woodbridge's Anthony Viola hit Anthony Graham for a 16-yard touchdown in the third quarter, came back to tie it later in the quarter when Harris raced 43 yards for his first score. The lead grew to 13-6 when LeGrand capped a long drive with a two-yard plunge, before the Barrons got within 13-12 on a DeShawn Knight four-yard run, before Harris struck again, racing 62 yards for a score, and a 20-12 Colonia lead. Woodbridge got within 20-18 on a Knight 45-yard run with just under three minutes to play in the game, but LeGrand made a big tackle on the two-point conversion attempt to protect the lead. The Barrons had one last chance to steal the game, driving all the way to the Colonia 26 in the final moments before the drive stalled. |

Cuozzo named Colonia girls coach Deana Cuozzo, a standout basketball player at Bishop Ahr High School, has been hired as the new head girls basketball coach at Colonia High School. Cuozzo, a 24-year-old Port Reading resident, takes over from Tom Chmiel, who was not rehired after last season. Chmiel led Colonia to a record of 78-46 over the last five winning seasons, including 17-9 a year ago. After scoring over 1,200 career points at Bishop Ahr, Cuozzo played four years at The College of New Jersey before graduating in 2006. Since then, Cuozzo has taught special education at Colonia High School and served as the junior varsity coach at Woodbridge under John Moyer. "I'm ready, I'm all set," said Cuozzo, whose team is currently playing in two summer leagues. "This is a great opportunity for me to take a highly-respected program to the next level." Cuozzo said she has been influenced by her high school coach, Kevin Harper, Moyer and her father John, who is an assistant coach at St. Joseph in Metuchen. "I still talk to Kevin Harper, I learned a lot from him," said Cuozzo. "I worked very well with John Moyer and I have a lot of respect for him and of course my father helps a lot. It's nice to come home from a practice or a game and if I have a question, he's right there." Cuozzo, who will be working with fourth-year JV coach Michele Lohman and newly-appointed freshman coach Matt Smith, currently has 20 players (not counting freshmen) who are working on their games on a daily basis. "We have a bunch of great kids and I'm proud of how hard they're working," said Cuozzo. "We only graduated one senior, so we have a good nucleus returning, plus a good group of young kids." The Patriots have their two double-figure scorers returning in seniors-to-be Sasha Hall (13.3 ppg.) and Simone Smith (12.4), who combined to average more than 25 points per game. "Every new coach wants to be successful right away," said Cuozzo. "Right now, I just want to see improvement every day and I'm focused on seeing them graduate as good, well-rounded people." |

Colonia duo represents Patriots football in All-Star game BY SHAWN LAYTON Staff Writer Linebacker Ryan Don Diego and offensive tackle Jonathon Grasso joined Colonia High School's head football coach Ben Lasala on the Middlesex County roster at this year's Snapple Bowl. The annual event, now in its 15th year, saw the Middlesex County side beat the All-Star roster from Union County, 14-7. While this was the third straight year the Middlesex All-Stars won the event, the real winners are the off-the-field All-Stars, with all proceeds from the event going to the Lakeview School for Cerebral Palsy in Edison and the Children's Specialized Hospital in Mountainside and Fanwood. "It was a typical Snapple Bowl on the field," Lasala said. "There was the usual sloppy play because of the limited preparation, and as usual the game was decided on a big play. The game quality is always secondary, though. The game is for a great cause, and that's what's important." Colonia's standout player the past couple of seasons, linebacker Eric LeGrand, was unable to play in this year's All-Star event. The highly recruited LeGrand is already working out with the Scarlet Knights in preparation for his freshman season at Rutgers. With LeGrand out, it was Don Diego and Grasso's time to shine. "Ryan did not play his junior year and really made up for it with a solid senior season," Lasala said. "He's a hard-working kid with a fiery personality. He always plays as hard as he can on every play." The play of Grasso last season was a big reason the Colonia team had great success running the football last autumn. "Jonathon is a finesse player and had a great season for us," Lasala said. "We rushed for somewhere between 1,600 and 1,700 yards last year, and Jonathon Grasso was a big reason we were successful." Grasso is headed to Montclair State University and will be joined by Colonia teammate Nate Brown. Brown, one of the state's best defensive backs last season, is a strong physical player with tremendous skills. "Nate is extremely athletic," Lasala said. "Like Eric LeGrand, Nate is a scholarship kid. He should do well at Montclair." LeGrand is certainly one of Rutgers' biggest acquisitions for this season. The All-State linebacker was on the roster in the North- South All-Star game. "Eric is one of, if not the best, players to ever put on a Colonia uniform," Lasala said. "He is an exceptional player on the field and a great person off the field. We will certainly miss him but wish him all the best at his new home." |
